DataVisuals Introduces Decision Governance for IT™, an Enterprise Architecture Platform Built Around the Business

New platform tests every business goal against how well the IT tech portfolio supports it, and how confident that judgment is.

Concord, Wisconsin – November 3rd, 2026 – DataVisuals today announced Decision Governance for IT™, an enterprise architecture platform that measures the IT tech portfolio by one standard: how well it supports the goals of the business. The platform is now the company’s flagship product, building on Decision Governance for Financial Institutions™.

For two decades, enterprise architecture and IT management tools have answered the same question: what do we have? They catalog applications, map capabilities, and track cost and lifecycle. That inventory matters, but it rarely reaches the boardroom. Executives do not ask what the portfolio contains. They ask whether it can deliver the plan.

Decision Governance for IT™ answers that question directly. Every business goal is tested against how well the IT tech portfolio supports it, and how confident that judgment is.

“Enterprise architecture has spent years describing the portfolio and very little time judging it,” said Christopher Johnson, Founder and Principal of DataVisuals. “A capability map doesn’t tell a CEO whether the strategy is fundable on the systems they already own. That’s the only question that gets architecture a seat at the table, and it’s the one most tools never answer.”

From inventory to judgment

At the core is the Discovery viewpoint, built on three questions: What do we have? What do we think about it? What do we want to do with it? Traditional tools stop at the first. Decision Governance for IT™ carries every system through all three.

Most of today’s IT tech portfolio is SaaS and commercial software, each with its own poorly understood data model. Decision Governance for IT™ connects them through a single chain: Data Contracts → Semantic Layer → Decisions.

  • Data Contracts set the standard for what each system provides and guarantees.
  • The Semantic Layer gives that data a shared business meaning across the portfolio.
  • Decisions are recorded with their owner, rationale, and outcome, so leadership can see what was decided, why, and whether it worked.

The operating model is deliberately simple. Business domains own the meaning of their data. IT owns the contract and the standard.

“Every architecture team I’ve led had the same gap,” said Johnson. “We could tell you where data lived. We couldn’t tell you just what it meant to the business, or which decisions depended on it. The semantic layer closes the first gap. Governed decisions close the second. We also demystify the Architecture Review Board and reimagine it as a business-led steering function we call the Decision Board.”

Built by a practitioner

Johnson brings more than 20 years of enterprise architecture and data leadership to the platform. He has led and built Enterprise Architecture at Fortune 500 companies, as well as bringing those experiences to Silicon Valley start-ups. He spent five years on the CEB (now Gartner) Enterprise Architecture Advisory Council. Additionally, he's TOGAF certified and a credited contributor to DAMA’s DMBOK2.

“I didn’t build this to replace the architecture repository,” said Johnson. “I built it because the business never cared about the repository. It cares about outcomes. This puts architecture in that conversation.”
